Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
